You can hear sound on EARTH because there is air but if you go into space you cannot hear any sound because there is no air.

Sound is a type of energy created by vibrations. Also sounds can travel through water, air, and in solids. When sound bounces off any object we can hear an echo.

A sound travels like waves. These waves create vibrations. We can hear these vibrations.

Sound travels faster through solids than in water. Sound travels faster in water than in air.

Japans Biggest Earthquake and Tsunami

LI: We are learning to write an Information Report.

Japan is experiencing its greatest hardships since World War II, Prime Minister Naoto Kan says. This earthquake, tsunami, and a crisis at a nuclear plant have caused so much pain to the people of Japan. Police say that the death toll in one of the worst-hit areas is likely to go more than 10,000. It is such a nightmare to know our friends are suffering so much.

A big explosion has hit a nuclear power station in north-eastern Japan which was badly damaged in Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami. A building housing a reactor was destroyed, but the authorities are saying that the reactor itself was intact inside its steel container.

A huge rescue and relief operation is under way in these regions which has killed lots of people. All readers have been describing what life is like after the earthquake. Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan has warned that the shutdown of several nuclear reactors is likely to lead to a shortfall in electricity supply.

It is really sad that these people in Japan have no electricity, it is so cold now and what will happen to the aged people? Who will look after them??? How will they bear the cold??

Christchurch Earthquake

HI my name is Richard and I am a year 7 student at Tamaki Intermediate School. I am sorry that your loved ones have died. We are wearing red and black to remember you.
We have all donated $2.00 to help you rebuild your schools and some of the buildings. Even though I am in Auckland it still affects me. We have donated 300 dollars.
We also thank all the people who have come from all over the world to help us.

Christchurch Disaster

Hi my name is Aluat and I’m a year 7 student at Tamaki Intermediate School in Auckland. It is very sad that your town has been wiped out. The most sadness I think is that hundreds of people have lost their lives and over 165 people have been killed by the buildings those have fallen on them because of the earthquake. Many of the buildings are destroyed.

Today Tamaki Intermediate students are wearing red and back clothes to support what has happened in your town and all of us have donated $2.
This money is going to those people in need. We are trying to rise three hundreds that will be sent down to schools so they can have books, pens and pencils to help students to start their schools immediately.
We are happy for all those people who have donated money to help people buy food, water and other necessary things to start their lives. It is very sad that everyone there are leaving Christchurch to go to other cities in New Zealand because of fear that it can happen again and again. I hope that your town can again see the beauty it had earlier.

Nutty Professors all the way!

We the students from Room 11 have been total Nutty Professors this term. We have been some kind of secret learners working our way through our Science Projects for the Science Fair. Our school seems like an ordinary school but it is not, it is a very special school in which we are provided with opportunities to take part in all the cool activities planned well by our teachers.

Our topic for this term was “Nutty Professors”. Each one of us conducted Science experiments like scientists. It was very interesting to see and learn about each other’s experiments. We were able to scientifically explain the experiment results. We are happy that we are getting ready to go to Year 8. We are all trying to be excellent in all that we do in our class and in school.

Our goal in life is to be as good as our teacher thinks we are. To make her and ourselves proud, we learn well and do our best. This term we worked hard to do our class work independently, or with a buddy or in group situations. We respect each other and work well together. According to our interests, we take part in various school activities like Choir, Guitar Group, Ukelele, Kapahaka, Bollywood Dance, Media, School Sports and so on.

We all love reading. We are all so lucky that we get lovely Duffy books for free. They are so wonderful to read and sometimes we feel that it is our own life’s story. We are fortunate that we are learning Te Reo Maori from a specialist teacher Mrs. Bailey.

Bradley from our room is our school council representative and he can sense if we are up to some mischief. And so, we are good in class and make each other proud.

Admirer of duffy books

Duffy books are reading books for children to read. Some of these books are non-fiction books, some are fairy tales and some are based on the true stories.

These books help us to speak proper English, find information and also there is always something to learn.

Duffy books are a lot fun to read and also interesting to read. Some of the Duffy books are sad and when you read it, you feel like you are a part of the story.

Duffy books are reading books. They have lots of sentences, pictures and paragraphs. The stories have authors and illustrators.

Duffy books help us to learn to read and retell the stories. We get to imagine lots of things by looking at the pictures. It helps us to understand our future. We in our school read these Duffy books to enjoy and also get lot of information.

I think all the schools should give Duffy books to their students to help them learn and be good people in the community.

We are so lucky in our school that all of us get Duffy books to take with us. Thank you Duffy.
