Experiment

Put one spoonful of sugar into one of the bottles use the plastic funnel to guide the crystals into the bottle. Add the sugar slowly so that it does not block the neck of the funnel.

Repeat step 1, placing each of the other solids (fine sand, instant coffee granules, plain flour) in its own bottle. Now half fill each bottle with water and screw on the cap. Shake each bottle ten times.

Look carefully at each bottle to see if you can still see solid particles. Decide which solids form a solution and which solids form a suspension.

A liquid in which a solid substance has been dissolved.

Example: Sugar and Water

Suspensions

The particles in suspensions are larger than those found in solutions. Components of a suspension can be evenly distributed by a mechanical means, like by shaking the contents, but the components will settle out.

Sound

Learning Intention: I am learning to listen to the key words.

You can hear sound on EARTH because there is air but if you go into space you cannot hear any sound because there is no air.

Sound is a type of energy created by vibrations. Also sounds can travel through water, air, and in solids. When sound bounces off any object we can hear an echo.

A sound travels like waves. These waves create vibrations. We can hear these vibrations.

Sound travels faster through solids than in water. Sound travels faster in water than in air.

Japans Biggest Earthquake and Tsunami

Japan is experiencing its greatest hardships since World War II, Prime Minister Naoto Kan says. This earthquake, tsunami, and a crisis at a nuclear plant have caused so much pain to the people of Japan. Police say that the death toll in one of the worst-hit areas is likely to go more than 10,000. It is such a nightmare to know our friends are suffering so much.

A big explosion has hit a nuclear power station in north-eastern Japan which was badly damaged in Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami. A building housing a reactor was destroyed, but the authorities are saying that the reactor itself was intact inside its steel container.

A huge rescue and relief operation is under way in these regions which has killed lots of people. All readers have been describing what life is like after the earthquake. Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan has warned that the shutdown of several nuclear reactors is likely to lead to a shortfall in electricity supply.

It is really sad that these people in Japan have no electricity, it is so cold now and what will happen to the aged people? Who will look after them??? How will they bear the cold??
